Fall has been a hot topic of interest here at All Things Michigan the past couple of weeks. Everyone is searching for news about Michigan Fall Colors, Michigan Color Tours, Michigan Corn Mazes, and Apple Picking in Michigan. I thought it only fitting to throw out a Top Ten List using Michigan in the fall as a topic. Feel free to add your two cents to the discussion and add on to this Top Ten.

Read MoreWell, duh. Common sense recommends that too. I compost my leaves every year and by the end of summer I have a wonderful pile of nutrient-rich dirt to add to my raised beds. Folks, that is free (and environmentally friendly) fertilizer you're missing out on when you burn leaves. Anyway, leaves will be falling soon all across Michigan (due to the summer heat and lack of rain mine aren't even turning color - they're just dropping) and it's much better all around for the environment to compost those leaves than to burn them. Granted, there is something about the smell of smoldering piles of leaves on a crisp autumn day that take me back, but it's just not a sound practice. I'm not turning hippie here, I just happen to agree with the Michigan DEQ and think that a sounder solution is to compost those leaves.
If you don't know much about composting you can feel free to visit a page I made entitled, A Lazy Man's Guide to Compost. You don't need a lot of space (which you'll see at my guide) to compost. I use a 4' x 4' enclosure for my main composting and in the fall I just dump my leaves in a pile next to the compost bin. Come springtime the heavy winter snows have compacted my pile of leaves and I can transfer them to the compost bin.
I've spotted a random tree here and there that is turning color down here in southwest Michigan and while it won't hit its peak for a while down here it won't be long and Michigan's Upper Peninsula will be a dazzling display of color. We picked a bushel of apples yesterday at Hubbard's Corey Lake Orchards. It was a gorgeous day and the slight breeze wafted the fresh smell of grapes growing next to the apple trees. If you have never smelled rows and rows of ripening grapes you won't really know what I am talking about. It's this intoxicating fragrant pure grape smell - sorry best I can do to describe something you smell ;). Anyway, I digress. This post is about an apple sauce recipe I just came up with in the kitchen this morning. With all of those apples (and the opportunity to pick a bunch more) we wanted to make up large batches of apple sauce and store them in the freezer in quart-size bags for easier storage (and defrosting). Rather than stand over a pot of sliced apples and stirring them occasionally I decided to come up with a crockpot recipe for apple sauce.
