East Channel Lighthouse on Grand Island

Andrew Norton

The first time I saw the East Channel Lighthouse on Grand Island was on a trip up to the Big Bay Point Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast. My wife and I were traveling through Munising on M-28 and pulled off at a scenic overlook just outside of town. At first glance through our binoculars I thought it was a church that had fallen into disrepair.

Of course common sense told me that building a church directly on the shore of Lake Superior on a remote island was too strange to be true. Upon closer inspection the light tower became more distinct and we knew that it had been a lighthouse. In October of 1908 the last keeper packed his belongings and left. It surprises me that it is standing after over 100 years of the winds and waves of Lake Superior.

In a cost saving move the lighthouse was constructed of timber with wood siding instead of the more commonly used brick or stone. The money saved in construction was probably spent ten-times over in the continuing maintenance necessary in fighting the results of Lake Superior weather. It is difficult to picture this wind-weathered lighthouse with a coat of white paint as it wore during its 40 years (1868-1908).

In 2001, work was done to reconstruct a protective crib out of wooden posts and rock. This protection will help keep the East Channel Lighthouse from deteriorating at a quick rate, but more restoration work is needed if the light is to be saved from the ravages of time and Lake Superior.

Spend a Weekend at DeTour Reef Lighthouse

Andrew Norton

For $170 ($150 for members of the DeTour Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society), you can become the keeper of the DeTour Reef Lighthouse for three days and two nights. From Friday to late Sunday you will be in charge of keeping the lighthouse clean and helping greet tour visitors. You need to be in good physical condition as multiple trips up and down the 20-foot pier ladder might be required. Sound like a lot of work? It is. Is it a unique experience? Definitely.

If you are a lighthouse lover, there are priceless sunsets and the opportunity to get a brief glimpse of what a lighthouse keeper faced at the DeTour Reef Lighthouse. Boat watchers are welcome, too. Over the course of the weekend you will see dozens of freighters passing by the lighthouse.

Susan Ager, Detroit Free Press Columnist, wrote an article of her personal account of staying a weekend at the DeTour Reef Lighthouse. It is an interesting read if you want to know more about lighthouses and the conditions that lighthouse keepers worked under. Also, if you are at all interested in becoming a keeper for a weekend it is a good primer in just how much work is required of you for those three days.

You can read her article here.

Keep tabs on all of Susan's summer travels at her blog.

I was intrigued by the isolation of the DeTour Reef Lighthouse and decided to see if I could find a satellite view of it at Google. Sure enough, I did. Check it out. After viewing this up close view, you should zoom out a little bit and see how the lighthouse appears to be bobbing and floating in Lake Huron.

Michigan Gas Prices Week of 7/3/06

Andrew Norton

As I wrote last Thursday gas prices have indeed shot up (like a bottle rocket) for the 4th of July extended weekend. The average price of gas in Michigan as of today, July 3rd, is $2.986. This morning I saw prices anywhere from $2.97 to $3.09. It's funny (strange, not ha-ha) that the station near us that had the lowest prices (before raising them $.32 overnight last Tuesday) at $2.77 last week is now the highest in the area at $3.09. Nothing like a little gas price gouging in honor of our country's birth.

Cool Fireworks Photo From Manchester Michigan

Andrew Norton

The grand finale, originally uploaded by Red Wing Fan Mike.

I was perusing flickr.com in search of interesting photos of Michigan fireworks displays from years past. When I came across this one from Manchester's fireworks display in 2005 I immediately thought it looked like a dandelion head.

Don't you remember blowing those seeds all over the yard as a child? Anyway, I could not believe the uncanny resemblence it had and thought it was pretty cool.

Have a great weekend!

Create a Fireworks Display Over Detroit Online

Andrew Norton

I found this neat site that lets you choose from a bunch of different major U.S. cities and then set off a fireworks display using the Shockwave Flash player. Wouldn't you know it? Detroit was one of the options :)! It is a fun little waste of time. You just click the buttons under the city display and shoot off different types of fireworks. There is even a grand finale button you can hit for a real whiz-bang finish.

Go there now, and waste some time!
