Documentary On Tiger Stadium to Premiere April 24th

Andrew Norton

Stranded at the Corner, premiering April 24 at the Gem Theater, is a documentary that looks at the history and fate of Tiger Stadium. Tiger Stadium is baseball's oldest playing field still in existence (although unused) and will turn 100 years old in 2012 only if it is still standing.

The Corner

The documentary covers Tiger Stadium's illustrious history as well as the steps that have led to its possible demise. Tickets will be $8.50 at the door or you can save a couple bucks and get them for $6 at the Stranded at the Corner website. You can also view some video clips from the documentary as well as get information about a DVD of Stranded at the Corner.

What would have been really cool (and ironic) is if they could have erected a screen in the outfield of Tiger Stadium and shown it there. Of course, the Ilitch (evil empire?) family would never allow such "blasphemy" to be shown. The city of Detroit owns the property so why does the Ilitch family have the final say in Tiger Stadium's use and fate?

The Ilitch's would not allow any activities for baseball's All-Star weekend to take place at Tiger Stadium, but they did allow Snoop Dogg to have a beer-sponsored party there for the Super Bowl weekend. Why? Does the Ilitch family use their redevelopment of downtown Detroit as leverage with the city? Do they know the whereabouts of the late(?) Jimmy Hoffa?

Here are some articles I have posted already about the future of Tiger Stadium - Replace Tiger Stadium with Target - Ugh! Say it Ain't so, Tiger Stadium to be Demolished?

Check out a history of Tiger Stadium with facts, figures, and the ballpark's dimensions.

Miners Castle at Pictured Rocks

Andrew Norton

Pictured Rocks, originally uploaded by kjjahnke.

Here is what Miners Castle looked like before the turret on the right broke off on April 13, 2006. Now only the larger turret on the left remains.

As my son calls it - pretty water. It is some of the most beautiful country in Michigan.

Collapse of Miners Castle at Pictured Rocks

Andrew Norton

I just read on The Mining Journal that the northeast turret of Miners Castle at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore broke off and fell into Lake Superior last week. Evidently, the annual freezing and thawing had taken its toll on the crumbling layers sandstone and led to its ultimate demise. Miners Castle is probably the formation that most people remember when they think of their visits to Pictured Rocks. It is one of the most photographed formations as well.

I remember it from a family vacation from quite a while back. I snuck over the railing and leaned over the edge of the sandstone cliffs staring straight down the 90 foot drop into Lake Superior's icy blue waters. Pictured Rocks are probably one of the most picturesque spots in Michigan.

I'll be posting a photograph from flickr.com of what Miners Castle looked like with both turrets standing so you can refresh your memory of what Miners Castle looks (or looked) like.

When Moles Attack

Andrew Norton

With the arrival of spring comes the arrival of that destroyer of lawns - the mole. Moles are not all that bad. They do eat different insects and aerate your yard which is really a big help. However, tripping over huge mounds of dirt and having a lawn that looks like it is riddled with craters is not always aesthetically pleasing. If you have kids you can always enlist them to stomp down the tunnels for you before you mow the yard. Otherwise you end up sending chunks of turf and good-sized rocks flying when your mower makes contact with a large tunnel.

Two common ways to get rid of moles is through the use of poisons or mole traps. For a listing of the many ways you can try to get rid of moles check out this article in the Lansing State Journal or Jim Harding's critter website.

Gas Prices Week of 4/17/06

Andrew Norton

You will be paying around $2.809 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline around Michigan this week. That is the new statewide average that is up 24 cents from a month ago and 57 cents from this same time last year. The $2.238 per gallon you spent one year ago will only buy you .80 of a gallon this year.

$2.238 (last year's price per gallon) / $2.809 (today's statewide average per gallon) = .80 gallons

I hope that I didn't depress you too much with today being a Monday. Oh, and one more bit of information for you - today is the deadline to file your taxes! Now are you depressed? I hope not.
