Gas Prices Week of 4/10/06

Andrew Norton

$2.71 is the average price you can expect to pay for one gallon of regular unleaded gasoline this week. At the Fuel Gauge Report it shows that just a short month ago we were only paying $2.46 per gallon. $3 per gallon, here we come! :( Meanwhile, gas stations are fighting back with an advertising campaign that they hope will turn drivers' anger on the correct parties - Big Oil. Remember, independent gas station owners do not have a lot of control over the prices and they don't get to share in all of the big profits being generated by the oil industry these days.

Check out the Smart Commute Program in Traverse City that could become a model for a statewide program.

What are your thoughts on the price of gas? Will you stay close to home this summer?

Campfires, S'mores, and Baseball

Andrew Norton

We had our first campfire of the year last night. It was a gorgeous day and we spent the afternoon working in the flowerbeds and just enjoying the warmth. Below is a picture of our campfire.

First campfire of 2006

I didn't have the camera with me when the fire was blazing out of the sides and catching the wooden handle on fire. We had a lot of sticks in the fire pit that we had picked up this spring and they really generated some heat. I had to get some water and soak down what was left of the handle in hopes of salvaging it.

A nontraditional campfire meal of spaghetti was shared around the fire followed by some delicious schmoes (s'mores to you). I really don't know where we came up with calling s'mores schmoes. At some point our family just started calling them that and it has stuck.

We would have roasted hot dogs, but my son and I had hot dogs for lunch to help get in the mood for the Detroit Tigers home opener yesterday. Even though the Tigers lost I wish I could have been there. Anyway, we had a great day yesterday. :)

Springtime & Tigers Baseball

Andrew Norton

Springtime and the Detroit Tigers go hand-in-hand. They are both filled with hope of good things to come early in the season. Once again, hope springs eternal for the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are 5-1 coming back to Motown to play their home opener today. The weather will be absolutely gorgeous for baseball in Detroit today.

I hope that like the first warm spring day the Tigers are not teasing us and setting us up for cold and cloudy days ahead. As a lifetime Tigers fan who hasn't had a whiff of success since the Sparky Anderson era came to an end I am hoping against all hope that this is the year the Tigers break out of the cycle of mediocrity.

I am not asking for even a post season spot this season. I just want the Tigers to at least have a winning record and be fun to watch. Go Tigers!

Tigers fans might want to read this article in the Detroit News about opening day.

Eat Dinner as a Family

Andrew Norton

Mitch Albom has a great column from Sunday's Free Press on the advantages of families that eat dinner together. As a kid, the dinner table was where we talked about our day at school and learned that if you complained about how you had more vegetables on your plate than your sister you ended up getting another heaping spoonful. Families that have dinner together won't be without their trouble. However, I am willing to bet that a family that cares enough to make it a priority to eat dinner together is already ahead of most other families. It shows a commitment to the family instead of extra music or sports practices, or meetings you just couldn't say no to.

It is scary how busy families are these days with individual activities. We are so busy having "fun" that we have forgotten how to have fun without being busy. A fun and full life is not about how many different activities you can be involved in.

We recently had a missionary at our church that made a statement that has stuck with me. He was in Africa and one of the Africans laughed at him for wearing a watch. He said to the missionary, "In America, you have watches. In Africa, we have time."

Time. All the money in the world won't buy more when you realize you don't have much left.

Warm looking barn photo

I really like the way the vibrant red of the barn stands out from the brilliant green of the grass and blue hue of the sky. I love seeing good old wooden barns. They just have more charm to them than the modern steel pole barn construction you see going up these days.

This photo comes from Lapeer County.
