East Channel Lighthouse on Grand Island

Andrew Norton

The first time I saw the East Channel Lighthouse on Grand Island was on a trip up to the Big Bay Point Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast. My wife and I were traveling through Munising on M-28 and pulled off at a scenic overlook just outside of town. At first glance through our binoculars I thought it was a church that had fallen into disrepair.

Of course common sense told me that building a church directly on the shore of Lake Superior on a remote island was too strange to be true. Upon closer inspection the light tower became more distinct and we knew that it had been a lighthouse. In October of 1908 the last keeper packed his belongings and left. It surprises me that it is standing after over 100 years of the winds and waves of Lake Superior.

In a cost saving move the lighthouse was constructed of timber with wood siding instead of the more commonly used brick or stone. The money saved in construction was probably spent ten-times over in the continuing maintenance necessary in fighting the results of Lake Superior weather. It is difficult to picture this wind-weathered lighthouse with a coat of white paint as it wore during its 40 years (1868-1908).

In 2001, work was done to reconstruct a protective crib out of wooden posts and rock. This protection will help keep the East Channel Lighthouse from deteriorating at a quick rate, but more restoration work is needed if the light is to be saved from the ravages of time and Lake Superior.

Cool Fireworks Photo From Manchester Michigan

Andrew Norton

The grand finale, originally uploaded by Red Wing Fan Mike.

I was perusing flickr.com in search of interesting photos of Michigan fireworks displays from years past. When I came across this one from Manchester's fireworks display in 2005 I immediately thought it looked like a dandelion head.

Don't you remember blowing those seeds all over the yard as a child? Anyway, I could not believe the uncanny resemblence it had and thought it was pretty cool.

Have a great weekend!

Picture of a Troublesome Black Bear

Andrew Norton

Curious Bear...., originally uploaded by Allan M.

I was thinking about the previous article I wrote about the black bears that were hanging out in Ironwood over the weekend and thought I would see if anyone at flickr.com had some black bear pics. This was the first one that popped up when I searched for "Michigan black bears." The photographer states that "the bears in Ontonagon all seem to flock to the dumpster behind this ice cream stand."

Evidently, the owners of the ice cream stand have not yet read the DNR's guide to preventing bear problems in Michigan.

Incredible Pictures of Shipwrecks in Lake Huron

Andrew Norton

The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary put together an incredible slide show of a series of pictures from "shipwreck alley" in Lake Huron. It is amazing how clear the water is in these images. You can see wood decking and anchor chains as well as a ship's wheel. The slide show doesn't last too long and should be fine even with a dial up connection. Check it out.

Ives Lake Barn - Neat Michigan Barn!

Andrew Norton

Ives Lake Barn, originally uploaded by argusmaniac.

What a cool looking barn! Spires, great vertical siding pattern, and of course - it is painted red! After the previous post about preserving Michigan barns I just had to post a picture of a truly unique and inspiring barn. :)

Manitou Island Slips Into the Fog

Andrew Norton

time to head back home, originally uploaded by javshak.

This is a great image from the ferry boat as it leaves South Manitou Island back to Leland. Dark skies give the lake an almost glazed over appearance as a misty fog stumbles across the harbor.

I would love to make a visit and explore South Manitou Island some time. Even better would be to camp out there for a night. Can you imagine the quiet you would have with no vehicles and hardly any other people? Sounds like paradise to me! :)
