The Voice of the Turtle - Ernie Harwell

Andrew Norton

When Ernie Harwell was still announcing games for the Detroit Tigers, the first radio broadcast of spring training would be cause for him to recite Song of Solomon 2:11-12 - The Voice of the Turtle. As a tribute to Ernie Harwell and the first radio broadcast of spring training today at 1pm I give you, The Voice of the Turtle.

For, lo, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; The time of the singing of birds is come, And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

This wouldn't be complete without hearing the great Mr. Harwell recite it so give a quick listen to him -

Happy 92nd Birthday to Ernie Harwell

Andrew Norton

Happy birthday, Mr. Harwell! I know he has good days and bad days so here's to hoping that today is one of the good days. In honor of Mr. Harwell's 92nd birthday, here is the audio from his 1981 Baseball Hall of Fame induction speech (also known as 'Baseball Is') -

Here is the video from the Ernie Harwell tribute at Comerica Park on September 16, 2009 -

Happy Birthday, and God Bless!

Video of Ernie Harwell's speech thanking Tigers fans

Andrew Norton

It's a wonderful night for me. I really feel lucky to be here, and I want to thank you for that warm welcome. I want to express my deep appreciation to Mike Ilitch, Dave Dombrowski and the Tigers for that video salute and also for the many great things they've done for me and my family throughout my career here with the Tigers. In my almost 92 years on this Earth, the good Lord has blessed me with a great journey, and the blessed part of that journey is that it's going to end here in the great state of Michigan.

Detroit Tigers to pay tribute to broadcast legend, Ernie Harwell

Andrew Norton

The hottest ticket in town (heck, even the state) tonight will be for the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals game at 7:05pm. Not so much for the teams (even though Detroit is in the midst of a division race) either. Longtime Tigers radio broadcaster and Baseball Hall Of Fame legend Ernie Harwell is to be honored by the team tonight. Ernie Harwell recently revealed that he has incurable cancer and there has been an outpouring of love and support from fans both young and old. I think it's great (and long overdue) for the Tigers to pay tribute to a real gentleman. Emotions will be running high in the ballpark tonight.

Ernie Harwell Tribute Video with a smattering of his legendary signature calls as well as his final sign-off from 2002:

Legendary Detroit Tigers Broadcaster Ernie Harwell Turns 90 this Friday

Andrew Norton

Ernie Harwell will turn 90 years young on Friday, January 25th. How does he do it? Daily exercise, doesn't eat a lot of sugars and fats, and his mental attitude. Ernie is nearly three times my age and he gets more exercise than I do. That doesn't bode too well for my longevity. Guess I had better hit the treadmill tonight ;).

Anyway, Happy Birthday to a true gentleman, Ernie Harwell.

Sharing the love Detroit Tigers style

Well, the 2007 season is only 2 games old for the Detroit Tigers. Due to the crummy winter weather we have, yesterday's game against the Blue Jays was postponed. In celebration of a new season and the hopes of warmer weather to come I invite you to check out these Squidoo lenses I created.

History of Tiger Stadium - includes pictures, facts, and more from the first ballpark at "The Corner" - Bennett Park to Tiger Stadium
