Five Fun Things to do in Michigan This Weekend 5/27 - 5/30

Andrew Norton

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer. Here are five fun things you can do this weekend across the great state of Michigan.

  1. Stand and applaud for the Veterans in your local Memorial Day Parade. Visit a cemetery and pay your respects to those who died in serving our country.
  2. Civil War Reenactment in Coldwater - 5/27 to 5/29. Battle reenactments, Civil War period wedding, dances, and more.
  3. Lumberjack Breakfast at the Tahquamenon Logging Museum from 7am to 12pm - May 28th. Pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, and fried potatoes cooked on a wood stove. Man, wish I was in the area - that sounds great!
  4. Mackinaw Memorial Bridge Race - race across the Mackinac Bridge May 28th. Call (231) 436-5664 for registration and more details.
  5. Ride the Keweenaw Weekend - 5/27 to 5/29. Come celebrate the Copper Harbor mountain bike trails with guided tours, bike demos, and downhill shuttle runs. Call (906) 289-4788 for more information.

Do you have plans for Memorial Day Weekend?

Andrew Norton

Memorial Day Weekend is always thought of as the unofficial start to summer and with the warm weather this week if even feels like summer. I know a lot of folks will be heading to one of Michigan's beautiful state park campgrounds for a weekend of camping. The forecast would appear great for the droves of people looking to hang out at the beach. We don't have any big travel plans, but that's okay. I have a bunch of work to finish in the garden and other various projects that I want to get knocked out before we really ease into those lazy hazy days of summer.

We'll most likely have a cookout, stand and clap for the local veterans in the Memorial Day parade, and head out to one of the area cemeteries for a Memorial Day Service headed up by the local VFW. How about you? What are your plans?

Memorial Day Weekend Roundup

Andrew Norton

The weather is shaping up to be absolutely beautiful this Memorial Day Weekend. I've noticed a large uptick in the number of travelers heading down U.S. 12 since the middle of the week. I wish safe travels for everyone on the road this weekend. We'll be attending the local parade on Monday and giving a wave of appreciation to the Veterans marching/riding in the parade. Later in the day we'll stop at a local cemetery for the annual Memorial Day program put on by the fine gentlemen from the VFW. It's a great way to give honor and show appreciation to our veterans.

Here's a roundup of Memorial Day Weekend related topics:

The Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) released a list of Michigan foods/companies to make your Memorial Day cookout a help to Michigan's economy. This info came via twitter from Natalie_Joy.

If you are traveling in Michigan this weekend, be sure to check out the MDOT Drive page for the latest news on construction and road conditions.

The Things They Carried

The Things They Carried, originally uploaded by All Things Michigan.

This photo is from last year's 4th of July Parade in Constantine, Michigan. With yesterday being Memorial Day and thinking of parades and our soldiers both past and present I thought I would share this photo.

This photo (and blog post) is titled 'The Things They Carried' as that is what popped in my head when I saw this mother/soldier marching in the parade. I have read Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried" which deals with the mental and emotional aspects of war and immediately thought that this photo illustrates just that both metaphorically and physically.

She is surrounded by the things she carried.

God Bless our Veterans and current service men and women. Thank you for all that you do.

Remember Memorial Day

Andrew Norton

Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have fallen fighting for our country. You don't have to agree with the war or the president, but you should pay your respects to those willing to serve in our Armed Forces. Last year I wrote a post following Memorial Day with the title, Did You Remember Memorial Day?.

I feel the theme of that post is of enough value to merit it's annual inclusion at this blog. This time I am posting it before Memorial Day. Read it below.

In the midst of all the cookouts, car races, and sporting events over the weekend did you remember why we celebrate Memorial Day? It is what I like to call, an unfortunate holiday. Wouldn’t it be far better to not have fallen soldiers to remember?

This world does not afford us the luxury of avoiding conflicts and wars. Therefore, we must remember why we celebrate Memorial Day. Lately, it seems, Memorial Day has been presented as more of the kickoff to summer instead of a solemn day of remembering those who gave their lives for our nation’s freedom.

Did you wave to the veterans in a Memorial Day parade yesterday? When the flag went by did you stand, remove your hat, and despite the heat still feel goosebumps?

Watch a parade on Monday. Stand up as the flag is carried past and clap for the veterans that have served our country proudly. Visit a cemetery and squint at the sunlight sharply reflecting off of the hundreds of American Flags waving in the soft breeze over the graves of veterans.

Remember Memorial Day.
