Say Yes to Michigan Campaign Postcard

Andrew Norton

I remember seeing these as bumper stickers back in the 1980s. I believe this particular campaign began in the 1970s. At the same time there were also those bumper stickers with the phrase, "Will the last person in Michigan please turn out the lights."

It wasn't until years later (hey, I was just a kid) that I realized that this wasn't a promotion of Michigan, but a snarky comment about the exodus of Michigan residents due to the poor Michigan economy.

There was also that jingle they played on the radio and on television ads - Yes, Michigan!

It went something like - Yes, Michigan! The feeling's forever.

That's all I can remember. My only hope is that I have now made that song stuck in the head of each and every one of you who reads this post ;).

Nottawa Wild Bird Supply

Andrew Norton

It's that time of the year again when it is a good idea to help out your local bird population by putting up a bird feeder. Not only to the little birdies get a pleasant winter treat, but you get the joy of seeing the variety of birds that come to your feeder. Our three year old loves seeing the bright red cardinals and blue jays. Around Christmas we built our own bird feeder and he helped paint it. He took great pride in seeing birds eat at "his" bird feeder.

You can get bird feeders, bird seed, field guides, nest boxes and more at Nottawa Wild Bird Supply in Nottawa, Michigan. If you can't make it down to Nottawa you can always order from their web site at www.NottawaWildBirdSupply.com.

Legendary Detroit Tigers Broadcaster Ernie Harwell Turns 90 this Friday

Andrew Norton

Ernie Harwell will turn 90 years young on Friday, January 25th. How does he do it? Daily exercise, doesn't eat a lot of sugars and fats, and his mental attitude. Ernie is nearly three times my age and he gets more exercise than I do. That doesn't bode too well for my longevity. Guess I had better hit the treadmill tonight ;).

Anyway, Happy Birthday to a true gentleman, Ernie Harwell.

Escanaba Pasty Shop Robbed

Andrew Norton

Dobber's Pasties, legendary Escanaba Pasty restaurant, was broken into last week. Two men and one woman, a Dobber's employee, broke a window which set off the alarm and made off with about $1,200 and some credit card receipts - all of which were recovered upon the suspects arrests. Dobber's is an Escanaba and U.P. landmark with pasties to die for. The question on a lot of locals minds is, "Why in the world did they take the money? They should have taken the pasties."

Via the Escanaba Daily Press

Visit Dobber's Pasties website where you can order pasties online and within a day or two you can heat up your frozen pasty for a taste of the U.P.
