Travelers Will Not Let Gas Prices Stop Them

Andrew Norton

According to a report by the Detroit News many believe that high gas prices will not be a deciding factor when it comes to traveling over Memorial Day Weekend. Many determine this weekend as the start of the summer season and folks have been itching to hit the road for a change of scenery. Gas prices that are averaging in the neighborhood of $2.80 per gallon apparently will not stop the majority of travelers. About the only area that seems to be taking a noticeable hit is the boating community. Marinas across the state are seeing a definite drop in the number of people putting in their boats compared to this time in years past. I guess if you want to own a boat, make it a sailboat so gas prices won't affect whether or not you hit the big blue.

Bed & Breakfasts, hotels, and resorts across the state are not taking a chance on high gas prices keeping visitors away. Many are offering cheaper rate packages, free gas cards with multiple night stays, and other assorted extras.

What do you think? Will gas prices keep you from traveling?

It is Time to Plant Those Tomatoes

Andrew Norton

John Schneider has a humorous column in today's Lansing State Journal about his annual battle to plant tomatoes as early as possible. After trying this the past few years, I can relate. However, this year I capitulated and plan on planting my tomatoes this weekend. The past two years have seen an abysmal tomato crop and whether or not it was from planting too early I don't know. What I do know is that I waved the white flag of surrender this year in the hopes of producing a bumper crop for a change.

It appears that the danger of frost might be behind us with summer-esque temperatures throughout the next week or so. So, I will plant those tomatoes this weekend and try to compensate any lack of rain this summer by watering them religiously. We'll see what happens.

Dick DeVos Knows His Business

Andrew Norton

Dick DeVos spoke with the Detroit Economic Club on Tuesday and expounded on how his experience running a business translates into turning around Michigan's economy. The question remains if he becomes our next Governor is, will the Michigan House and Senate work with him and make the tough decisions (i.e. giving the power back to the people) that our state needs to make? For instance, one of the things DeVos would cut to save our state money is the position of Surgeon General which was created by our current Governor, Jennifer Granholm. Um, I didn't know our state had a surgeon general which leads me to ask, why do we have one? If the people of the state don't know about the position, cut it because it can't be all that important.

I will say that DeVos has been rather vague about a plan for our state. If he truly wants to jumpstart Michigan's economy he needs to start laying out his plan/vision. We already know what we have with Granholm. We need to see what her contendor has in store for Michigan.

Muhammad Ali Creates a Field of Dreams for Niles

Andrew Norton

Thanks in large part to the efforts of Muhammad Ali, Niles schools have a new ball diamond for their baseball team. With "the world's greatest" spearheading the efforts and more than a little help from Home Depot and the Detroit Tigers, the old practice field (as players and coaches referred to the previous rundown field) at Niles is now a gem of a diamond. There are still funds needed to put in more bleachers, restroom facilities, a concession stand, and press box. Personalized bricks that will pave the walkway to the field are being sold to the public to continue raising the additional funds needed.

Watch a video from WWMT Channel 3 about this generous project that Muhammad Ali and his wife helped organize here.
