Losing friends to Michigan’s crummy economy

by admin on October 24, 2006

A good friend of mine recently moved out to Boulder, Colorado for a better job in a better economy. He was making decent money working in Accounting/Finance here in Michigan, but without any health insurance benefits. He would wait weeks or months here after sending out dozens of resumes for a measly one or two interviews.

In just one week out in Boulder he has had multiple interviews in just ONE day. It’s no wonder states like Wyoming are recruiting for jobs here in Michigan. When your state’s economy ranks 49th out of the 50 states every other state’s job market looks promising.

Neither Granholm nor DeVos has come out with a definitive fact-based plan for job creation here in Michigan. Neither candidate has come up with a feasible health care plan. Neither candidate has much of an idea on what it will take to improve the results of our education system.

Does either candidate deserve our vote?

I was ticked off about our state’s economic woes long before my good friend finally gave up on trying to make things work in Michigan. The biggest deciding factor in where he moved to was not the job market, it was the weather climate. It came down to Texas heat or the moderate climate of Boulder.

In case you were in denial about the state’s economy – just how bad is our economy when people don’t care where they move to as long as they move out of Michigan.

It didn’t matter where he ended up as far as he was concerned. He knew getting a job somewhere else would be relatively easy compared to Michigan.

Our State is Broke – Will Somebody Please Fix it?!?

The election is two weeks from today. It might as well be two years from today. We have a long road to economic recovery before us. The question is, how many more wrong turns can we afford to take?

Have you considered sending this information to some of the people in our government (representatives, legislators, etc.)? This is something they need to know. It is a sad state when people are so desperate to leave our state that they don’t even care where they move or how far they are from their friends and family. I am very disappointed in our government…

I agree with Lori. If things only continue to worsen over the next 2 years we’ll have quite a few more people leaving for jobs elsewhere.
We live in Michigan but my husband works in Indiana. Thankfully we live close enough to the state line that this is available to us.
I am quite saddened by these 2 candidates lack of answers and to be truthful I don’t want to vote for either one of them!

Governor Granholm does have a plan to improve Michigan’s economy. Unfortunately, turning around a situation like the one in which Michigan currently finds itself takes some time, much more than anyone would like. Many of Michigan’s problems are on a national scale or are resulting from decisions made in private board rooms. That said, Gov. Granholm is fighting hard to create new jobs, bring new companies into the state, and keep the ones that are already here from leaving. We’ve already seen an influx of high-paying tech jobs come into the state. Granholm is on the right track to put Michigan back on track. Dick DeVos’ only plan for Michigan is to make it a stepping stone in his personal quest for political power, and we’ve seen how well his Amway business model works out for everyone but the richest of rich.

Bryan,

What “right track” is Granholm on and how long is this track? She very well might be setting the foundation for Michigan’s future, only time will tell.

The influx of high-paying tech jobs is a trickle at the moment that will hopefully become a raging river. Once again, only time will tell.

I have written numerous times that DeVos has done nothing to explain in detail how to turn our state around.

This post was against both candidates. It just stinks what the good people of this state have had to put up with as far as our economy. It’s a joke.

When people have to leave your state to find better jobs you know that the Michigan’s problems have eroded to the point where it could very well take 10 years or more to begin seeing positive results. How’s that for a Halloween scare?

Andrew, I would say that if nothing else, Granholm’s “right track” is having a track at all while her opponent shows no desire to elaborate on his plans to help Michigan. It’s apparent that Governor Granholm is working for the good of Michigan, trying to bring in jobs and help the economy–I can’t really say the same for DeVos, who won’t even specify on what it is he plans to do. How can someone running for governor not elaborate on their plan to lead the state??

Andy,

You hit the nail on the head. Granholm’s plan (even if it is not perfect) is a P-L-A-N. Like you said, DeVos can not really have a plan. Otherwise wouldn’t we have heard about it by now?

I agree, I cannot fathom how you can run for governor and not give hard facts and details on how you will run the state better. It’s like he is a millionaire with money to burn and figures if he wins great – if not, oh well.

Hmm……….mm, reminds of the old bumper sticker seen in
Michigan years ago. “Will whoever is the last one to
leave Michigan please turn off the lights.” I shudder to
think what this all means for my grandchildren…will they
be able to live closeby in this state, or be like your friend and move away from family/friends to have a job that can
support themselves and a family too? Tuesdays election
is looming ahead of me, and I don’t like my choices.
Choice “slim or none”, and as my friend Rodney says:
“Slim’s in El Paso”. See, another one left Michigan!!!!!!!!!!
