I read it. My older brother forwarded it to me. I am a Michigan native, born and raised outside of Detroit. My family and extended family worked in the auto industry. Some still do. I have an American car. I always have.

I live in the Northeast now. Moved away in the late 90′s. But my roots are in Michigan and it hurts to see what is going on there now. I was back in November for an early Thanksgiving with my family and picked up a Sunday Detroit News and was dumbfounded by the size of the foreclosure sections. Seventy-eight pages of tiny type listing house and house that had been foreclosed on. The house next to the one I grew up in…foreclosed. As is the house behind and one or two across the street. I couldn’t get over it. Contrast that to the want-ads and four pages of available jobs.

I read and re-read the article. Albom is a gifted writer. He draws you in and doesn’t let you go. But I have to say, at the end of his article, where he is talking about going to see Gran Torino…I felt the pride just reading it…MADE IN MICHIGAN…tears came to my eyes. I will go and see that movie and I will stay to the very end just to see those 3 words and I will also stand up and applaud.

I too, live in the Northeast now, but I was born in Detroit and raised in Allen Park. I just read the article again for about the 20th time. Wonderful. I thought I moved away 20 years ago, but I now realize that a big piece of me is still there. Albom does a great job here. If Detroit and Michigan somehow rise again, no group of people will be more deserving.
