Apple picking time at Hubbard’s Corey Lake Orchard
0 Comments Published August 25th, 2008 in Michigan EatsWe stopped by Hubbard’s Corey Lake Orchard on our way home from church yesterday to pick up some fresh veggies and we were pleasantly surprised to find a few early varieties of apples for sale. Gala, Jonamac, and everybody’s favorite Honeycrisp. We picked up a bag of the Gala apples with the promise [...]

0 Comments Published August 21st, 2008 in Michigan EatsAccording to the Michigan Apple Committee the Michigan apple crop is expected to be “1/3 or more below average.” April snow, a May freeze, and weather too hot for ideal pollination all contributed to the expected fewer apples this fall.
The first apple (and most in demand) variety available in Michigan is the Honeycrisp. [...]
Michigan sweet corn crop is looking mighty tasty
0 Comments Published July 23rd, 2008 in Michigan Eats, State of MichiganMichigan has been blessed with just the right amount of rain for most areas where sweet corn is being grown. It looks to be a much better crop than last year’s which saw too much dry weather in most of Michigan to produce a good crop.

Picked over 30 pounds of blueberries at Locke’s Fruitful Acres
0 Comments Published July 22nd, 2008 in Michigan EatsThis morning we took the kids blueberry picking at Locke’s Fruitful Acres. Even though the owner, Victoria, said they suffered some frost damage this spring I thought the blueberry bushes were just as plentiful as in past years.

2 Comments Published June 19th, 2008 in Just Ramblin', Michigan EatsI’ve got to take a moment to brag on my garden a bit. I planted a 3′ x 3′ plot of strawberries in a raised bed four years ago and just let them spread to the rest of the raised bed and then let them spill out over the sides. The patch is [...]
Tags: strawberries, strawberry patch, strawberry-freezer-jamMichigan cherry farmers are looking at what could be as small of a crop as the decimated 2002 cherry crop for their projected 2008 crop. Hail, late frost, weak trees from last year’s drought, and poor bee pollination are sited as reasons behind the weak outlook.
Growers are looking at a cherry crop that will [...]
I don’t anticipate any tomato shortages or problems with salmonella this summer. My tomatoes are growing great in my raised bed garden. I planted two different varieties - Big Boy and Beefsteak as well as some Sweet 100 grape tomatoes. I can’t wait until they are ready. Yum!
If you don’t have [...]
Help support local growers this summer season by shopping at farmers’ markets across Michigan. Don’t know where the nearest farmers’ market is?
MSU has partnered up with Michigan Farmers Market Association and the Michigan Food & Farming Systems to create a website that lets vendors find a place to sell their homemade/homegrown goods as well as lets potential customers find farmers’ markets.
