An informal online poll on the homepage of the Sturgis Journal shows Dick DeVos leading Jennifer Granholm 57% to 38% with the remaining 5% of the votes cast as ‘other.’ It is a small sample size (442 total votes as of this morning), but it does tend to show what the residents of one of Michigan’s poorer counties thinks.

The residents of St. Joseph county are asking themselves if they are better off or worse off than they were 4 years ago. By looking at their votes and the mood around southwest Michigan I would have to say that folks around here believe they are worse off than they were 4 years ago. Granted this is a very small sample size, but I would wager that if you were able to poll 1,000 residents of St. Joseph county you would reach similar results.

The question is, how does the rest of the state feel? Are we better or worse than 4 years ago and how much does that affect your vote for governor of Michigan.

Interesting post. I believe that the folks in St. Joseph county feel that they are worse off than 4 years ago, but I don’t believe that Governor Granholm is to blame. The national economy is in a slump, owing greatly to the President’s economic policies, and the governor has done what she can to limit the effect on Michigan. Unfortunately, numerous circumstances, ranging from automaker cutbacks to a Republican controlled state legislature, have stalled her progress. That said, Gov. Granholm is on the right track and knows how to bring things around, whereas Dick DeVos and his millions have little interest in the working people of Michigan except for using them to further his own political ambitions.

Thanks for the comments, Bryan. Yes, there is a wealth of cirumstances that have combined (almost like the perfect storm took place to destroy Michigan’s economy) to put us in the position we are now in. Did Engler leave things a mess? Heck yeah.

Overall, voters are a ‘what have you done for me lately bunch’ and they usually speak their minds by voting for the other candidate. I am not saying it is right, but it just seems to be the case 9 times out of 10.

Our situation in Michigan is a bit odd in that with a little over a month to go before the election Michigan voters STILL do not really know what DeVos’ plan is. We still don’t have any details on the “how” of his plan to turn Michigan around.

Like I wrote yesterday, hopefully we will learn a lot more about both candidates through the upcoming debates in October. We need more than just a few catchy soundbites from each candidate. We need the cold hard facts.
