Let me preface this with the statement that I am looking at Gov. Granholm’s proposals and ideas unveiled at the State of the State Address with a non-partisan viewpoint. I am looking at it as a small business owner in a state that has a tough time getting new businesses to start and grow here. I am also looking at it from the point of a resident of a state with the nation’s highest unemployment rate.

The bottom line of her address is this - “In five years, you are going to be blown away by the strength and diversity of Michigan’s transformed economy” - Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

I don’t know about anyone else that lives, works, or does business in Michigan, but I don’t want to wait 5 months for good news, let alone 5 years. I am not looking for a quick fix, but I am looking for marked improvement a lot sooner than 5 years down the road.

After watching Ms. Granholm’s address last month, I have but one question: Is our good governor aware that the state of Michigan does indeed extend further north from Wayne County? Okay, in all fairness, she may have heard of Grand Rapids (home turf of our next governor). However, to the best of my knowledge, Michigan does continue on northward beyond the 43rd parallel. In fact, I believe Traverse City is what our leader refers to as one of her “cool cities”. So where is she?!! Like the moderator of this fine forum pointed out, many of our local businesses can’t hold out for the next five years for this magical economic rejuvinating potion of hers to take effect. We need tax relief from the top down and new business incentives for companies of all sizes. She would do well to look back a couple of decades to a little thing called supply-side economics, better known as “Reaganomics”. Maligned and misrepresented by a liberal press from its inception (even Bush 41 got in on the attack while running for the Republican nomination in 1980…remember his “voodoo economics” speeches?), trickle-down economic theory was proven to work throughout the mid to late eighties and right on through the dot-com boom of the nineties, regardless of who was in office. I would recommend to anybody reading this to pick up a little book called “The Fair Tax Book” by Neal Boortz and Congressman John Linder. It is aimed at tax restructuring at the federal level, but would result in an economic boom across the country. Okay…my rant is over. Have a great day and buy a basket from Andrew!

    UT,

I will have to read that book. For anyone interested, you can buy it at Amazon - The Fair Tax Book for $16.47.
